  Origins in engineering     
Varley began in 1886, recognising the shift from sail to steam. In 1948, NQEA was founded in Cairns, later building over 270 vessels including platforms for the Royal Australian Navy.
  Growth into a defence partner     
Norship was established in 1984 for the fishing sector, but rapidly expanded to support Defence, Border Force, and commercial operators, delivering certified shipyard services and in-service support.
  Part of the Varley Group     
Now part of the Varley Group, Norship continues to deliver seaworthiness and reliability through its skilled workforce across shipbuilding, engineering, and maritime support.
1886
George H Varley forms a plumbing and boiler-making business in King St, Newcastle.
A advert in The Newcastle Morning Herald proclaimed:
“All orders promptly attended to. Good workmanship guaranteed at moderate charges.”

1912
Having survived the Maritime strike of the 1890s and the turbulent economic times at the turn of the century, GH Varley Pty Ltd becomes incorporated.

1948
North Queensland Engineers & Agents (NQEA) Pty Ltd is established in Cairns as an engineering supply company, laying the groundwork for future maritime ventures.

1966
NQEA diversifies into shipbuilding, constructing over 270 vessels, including numerous naval platforms, solidifying its reputation in the maritime industry.

1984
The Fry family founds Norship to service the Gulf prawn trawler fleet and Cairns’ boating community, marking the beginning of a dedicated shipyard.

2009
Norship introduces the RF400 travel lift, enabling the servicing of larger vessels, including Australian Patrol Boats, and expanding its operational capacity.

2010s
Norship broadens its services to include commercial, defence, tourism, and luxury vessels, becoming a key player in Northern Australia’s maritime sector.

2021
Norship becomes part of the Varley Group, enhancing its engineering capabilities and expanding its reach within the maritime industry.

2024
Norship’s latest milestone is a game changer for Northern Australia’s marine sector, it’s a symbol of sovereign capability, economic growth and maritime innovation.
The marine maintenance shed is the first and largest of its kind in North Queensland.
